FORWARDERS
|
Forwarders are mobile units equipped with a small hydraulic knuckleboom loader and load bunk. The forwarder first picks up wood products and places them into the load bunk. Then the unit transports the products from the woods to a loading point for delivery to the processing facility. Most forwarders are rubber tired skidder units with extended rear frames to accommodate the load bunk. However, there are some crawler type units in service. The guidelines for forwarders regarding basic operations, movement, service, and maintenance are similar to those for rubber tired skidders and hydraulic knuckleboom loaders. There are some additional safety guidelines to remember: 1. When loading position the forwarder in a level area to prevent rollover. 2. Do not exceed the rated capacity of the loader. 3. Operate the forwarder only from the operator's station. Never try to operate the controls from the ground. 4. Do not overload the forwarder. Keep loads below the standards on the load bunk. 5. Never allow anyone to ride in the machine or on the load bunk. 6. For stability before loading or unloading always lower the blade and stabilizers if the unit is so equipped. 7. Maintain safe operating distances from all ground workers and other operations.
