D. MECHANIZED DELIMBING

Many logging operations are using mechanized delimbing equipment. The delimbing units have reduced woods workers exposures to chainsaws and ground hazards involved in the delimbing processes.

1. STATIONARY MOUNTS

a. Read and understand the operator's manual.
b. Follow the manufacturer's recommended guidelines for operation, maintenance, and safety.
c. Routinely inspect the unit for proper operation.
d. Repair or replace any damaged part before use.
e. Do not attempt to exceed the unit's rated capacities. Know the unit's limitations.
f. Only a trained operator shall be allowed to operate the delimbing equipment.
g. Proper personal protective equipment shall be used during operation and when performing maintenance and repair.
h. All ground workers and other mobile equipment should maintain safe distance from the unit.
i. Routinely clear accumulated slash and debris from the delimbing area using a skidder or bulldozer.
j. Do not attempt to remove jams in the delimber without ensuring all power is removed from the delimber (Zero Energy State). Always have the blades closed when working on the delimber.

2. MOBILE MOUNTS

a. Follow the general prestart and starting guidelines for mobile equipment operation as pertaining to mobile delimbers.
b. Follow the manufacturer's recommended guidelines for operation, maintenance, and safety.
c. Proper personal protective equipment shall be used during operation and when performing maintenance and repair.
d. Routinely inspect the unit for proper operation.
e. Repair and replace any damaged part of the unit before operation.
f. Do not exceed the unit's rated capacities. Know the unit's limitations.
g. Only a trained operator shall be allowed to operate the machine.
h. Maintain safe operating distances from all ground workers and other mobile equipment.
