INTRODUCTION: Logging contractors and their employees are increasingly aware of the importance of logger training and the importance it has on crew performance in productivity and safety. This training video, entitled Coaching the Professional Logger, is designed for crew foremen and each individual operator to improve job skills and crew performance by working under the leadership of the “coach,” the logging business owner.

He brings out the importance of defining each individual operator’s responsibility and the crew leader’s responsibility, as well as the concept of putting together a game plan. Applying these coaching techniques stimulates discussion specific to each position on the logging crew and the role that each crew member plays with respect to safety on the logging operation. The 25-minute video is divided into three segments to facilitate discussion in a group setting about three key concepts: the role of the players, the role of the coach, and formulating the game plan. The Players’ (logging crew’s) responsibilities are: know your position, watch out for the other positions, and execute the plays. The Coaches’ (logging contractor’s and/or foreman’s) responsibilities are: train the players, create a game plan, communicate the game plan, and keep score. The Game Plan involves: advance scouting (appraising site conditions), developing a (harvest) plan, identifying players’ responsibilities, and emphasizing (safe) performance. APPLICATION: Many “real life” hazardous logging situations are featured in the video, including entering and exiting the cab, operating near power lines, flagging the end of treelength loads, and controlling hazardous energy during equipment maintenance. Alabama logger Hunky Daniel describes an innovative “lock-out, tag-out” system his crew uses while performing safe equipment maintenance and repairs. (On mechanized harvesting operations, equipment maintenance is the number one cause of injuries.) Although useful when viewed by individuals, the video is best used in a comfortable group setting in which participants can learn from each other to develop “safer” logging practices. Glen Delony, a logger from Ozark, Alabama, recently attended a Coaching the Professional Logger workshop and comments “anybody that is willing to listen can learn something from these basic coaching concepts and situations that other loggers have experienced.” The challenges of productivity and profitability for loggers in the future will depend on how well operators are trained to play their position, and how well they are prepared in implementing a game winning strategy that includes production, safety, and equipment maintenance. The coach must be the leader.
