FRA'S SOUTHWIDE SAFETY COMMITTEE LOGGING SAFETY MATERIALS Forestry Education Materials: safety |
Oct. 2001 |
|
INTRODUCTION: Logging contractors and their employees increasingly realize they must take time to focus their attention on learning and practicing correct logging loss control principles. While they realize that high production can be the key to survival, they also know it is easy to lose sight of the role that safety plays, not only in human terms but also in business success. The FRA Southwide Safety Committee has taken into consideration the time constraints of busy logging contractors and their employees, and of others in the forestry community, and has produced safety publications that take these time constraints into consideration. Their "Safety for Woods Equipment Operators" pamphlets, "Loss Control Overviews," and the very popular Timber Harvesting Safety booklet were all developed by the Committee with the express purpose of providing concise logging safety information. These materials and other useful safety Southwide Safety Committee safety materials are discussed below. GENERAL FEATURES: In its "Safety for Woods Equipment Operators" series, the Southwide Safety Committee has produced brief but informative illustrated eight-panel pamphlets. Each pamphlet offers instruction in the safe operation of a specific class of logging machinery. The Committee believes that due to their low cost and design appeal, these pamphlets offer a better likelihood of wide distribution and use among loggers than some of the longer, more detailed publications available from other sources. Southwide Safety Committee safe equipment operation pamphlets currently in print are:
FRA also has published as a Technical Release a logging safety checklist developed by the Committee. Safety Self-Assessment for Eliminating Common Logging Hazards (97-R-27) is designed to help logging contractors identify, eliminate, and reduce safety hazards on their logging jobs. The Committee's flagship production, the Timber Harvesting Safety manual (94-A-10), is under revision and will be available again in 2001. The Committee has been producing items in its "Loss Control Overviews" series since 1994. Each Overview is a single-page flyer, which abstracts a different loss control issue in terms most useful to logging professionals. Overviews are designed for independent photocopying and distribution. Thirty-two Overviews have been published, and more are planned for future publication. Completed and available Overview titles to date are:
In 1998 the Committee produced its first video for loggers: Knuckleboom Loader Safety Training (98-A-5). The video comes with a companion guide for use in group training. The Committee has also collaborated with the North Carolina Forestry Association to produce the Green Light to Home trucking safety video. This video training program is available from NCFA. The Committee is constantly involved in the production of new safety materials, as well as revisions of current materials, to keep up-to-date with our changing times. In November of 2000 the Committee completed revisions of its Safe Site Preparation Procedures (00-A-10) and Safe Tree Planting Procedures for Hand and Machine Planters (00-A-11). FRA's newest logging safety training video is for high-speed disc cutters, The Cutting Edge of Safety (01-A-4). This video also comes with a training guide. APPLICATION: FRA recommends the wide distribution of all of these valuable Southwide Safety Committee resources as a means of getting good safety information into the hands of those who can benefit from it throughout the forest community. Apart from direct mail, the materials may be distributed at logging contractor meetings, loss control workshops, safety meetings, and logging equipment expositions. They have also received wide distribution in all regions through state logger training and education programs. COST: Most pamphlets in the "Safety for Woods Equipment Operators" series are available to FRA members at a cost of just $10.00 for a set of 50 copies ($12.00 for a set if 50 to non-members). However, Pre-Trip Checklist (97-A-9) and Quick Check Off the Deck (97-A-10), which include reminder decals, are priced at $12.50 per set of 50 ($25.00 per set of 50 to non-members).
