TRAINING – LOGGING SAFETY PRACTICES & FIRST AID

All logging employees must be trained (1) prior to initial assignment for each new employee; (2) whenever an employee is assigned new work tasks or new equipment; and (3) whenever an employee demonstrates unsafe job performance. New employees who can document prior training in their assigned task do not require retraining unless the employer determines the training is unacceptable. (OSHA Act CFR 1910.266(i)).

Required logging worker training shall include:

  1. General recognition and prevention of safety hazards in logging.

  2. Recognition of hazards, and protective measures which apply to their individual work tasks.

  3. Workers must be trained in the safe use and maintenance of the tools or equipment they may be required to use. They shall also be trained to understand and follow manufacturers’ instructions. Before workers perform their duties, they must demonstrate their ability to do so safely.

  4. An employee who is now, inexperienced, or unfamiliar with a new assignment shall be under the close guidance of a person experienced in the safe performance of the task until it is determined that the employee is able to work in a safe manner.

  5. All employees must receive first aid and CPR training and the training and/or certificate of training must remain current.

  6. It is important to recognize that training, providing information about hazards, and ways to prevent injury must be accompanied by supervision and oversight, to ensure workers know how to work safely. Guidance must also be provided until such safe work practices are demonstrated by workers.

  7. Employers shall record in writing and maintain as proof of compliance: dates of training, names of all employees trained, name of trainer, and subjects covered. Each record must contain the signature of the trainer or employer.

  8. Training will be supplemented with regular (at least monthly) safety meetings, which will review new and previously discussed general logging safety practices, first aid training, and personal safety equipment training.
